A Community That Prays, Builds and Listens Together…

Dear St. James Families,

There has been a great deal of hustle and bustle this week as we approach the end of the quarter on Friday, March 6. Classrooms have been full of activity, students finishing projects, preparing for assessments, and working together in the ordinary rhythm of school life. It is the kind of week where you can feel the effort of everyone, students, teachers, and families, working hard to build something good together.

In many ways, our daily lives at school resemble builders working across a vast plain. We construct many “bridges” and “arches” throughout the day, academic projects, sports teams, friendships, and the countless activities that shape our lives. These efforts are noble and worthwhile. Yet if we are honest, even our best efforts can sometimes leave us tired, or with the quiet sense that something more is being asked of us.

This is why Catholic education exists. At its heart, our mission is not simply to help students build better bridges through academics or achievements. Rather, it is to help them recognize the One who enters into the middle of ordinary life and invites each person personally to Follow Him.

For us, Christianity is not simply an idea or a theory to study from a distance. It begins with an event, something that happened in history and continues to encounter us in the present. The question that naturally arises is one that every person must eventually face: Did God truly enter into our history? Our school exists to create an environment where students are free to take that question seriously and Lent offers all of us a great chance to reflect on this question as well as, Who is Jesus to us?

In our classrooms we strive to form students who are thoughtful, intelligent, and curious. But true intellectual freedom does not mean closing ourselves off to possibilities, it means remaining open to the fullness of reality, including the possibility that God has acts within it. When students grow in this openness, they begin to discover that the deepest freedom does not come from independence alone, but from recognizing that we are made for love and relationship. Quite lovely and fittingly, the readings this week also shared this message: the danger of closing one’s heart through pride, possession, or comfort. the Pharisees seeking places of honor, the parable of the tenants in the vineyard, and the parable of the rich man and Lazarus

What we hope our students experience at St. James is not merely information about faith, but the discovery that life becomes fuller when we live within a community that seeks Truth together. In this way, every class, conversation, and shared moment becomes an invitation to grow, not only academically, but as human beings searching for meaning and purpose.

As we close this quarter, I also want to share a quick enrollment update. We are currently 76% re-enrolled for next year, which is a wonderful sign of the strength of our community. Several classes are now only two students away from earning their class celebration, and I am dlighted to share that the first grade class is now at 100%, well done first grade parents! If your family is still deciding about enrollment, we ask that you please consider signing and returning the Letter of Intent that was sent home. Even if you are not ready to complete the full enrollment process yet, returning that form helps us plan responsibly for staffing and resources for the coming year.

Looking ahead, next week will be a short week, but it will still be an important one. We will gather as a school community for our February Assembly, where we will recognize student achievements, celebrate strong grades, and acknowledge the hard work our students have shown throughout the month.

Thank you for the trust you place in our school and for the many ways you support the life of this community. The partnership between families and our school allows our students to grow in knowledge, character, and faith.
Sincerely in Christ,

Mr. McDonnell
